Prada history
1913
The company, originally known in Italy as Fratelli Prada (Prada Brothers), was found in 1913 by Mario Prada.
He designed handbags, trunks and suitcases through his two boutiques in Milan At this time the suitcase were made out of heavy cumbersome
walrus skin, which was not suited for air travel.
So they concentrated on waterproof handbags and exquisite leather accessories.
1978
Mario’s granddaughter Miuccia Prada took over the company. She inherited what was still a leather goods business from her mother,
and led the company's expansion into couture. Prada was struggling financially throughout the years. Miuccia Prada had spent years studying
in Milan Teatro Piccolo, and had a PhD in political science. However, she turned the house of Prada around towards haute couture.
At the same time she married Patrizio Bertelli. He took on the role as Business Manager which allowed Miuccia Prada to fully concentrate
on the design the new Prada look. Miuccia had been making waterproof backpacks made out of nylon fabric called Pocone
She unveiled the classic Prada Handbag and it became a hit just over night.
1982
Prada's first prêt-à-porter, or ready-to-wear collection was designed by Miuccia Prada in the autumn/winter season of 1989.
1990s
Prada was the leading fashion label
1992
Miuccia Prada presented the new fashion line Miu Miu which was more affordable and targeted to young customer.
Soon after Prada Sport label was created followed by a line of men’s wear and lingerie collection.
1993
Prada received the Council of Fashion Designer of America award for accessories. Since then Prada has gone to open
Boutiques all over the world. The distinct silver Prada triangle is a status symbol all over Europe and North America.
Miuccia Prada was voted into the 30 most powerful women in Europe. She took on her grandfather’s small leather good company and created an empire.
